What is the Significance of the Refrigerant in My Air Conditioning System?

Your air conditioning system is truly a feat of engineering that allows you to stay comfortable in your home no matter how hot it gets outside. In order to remove heat from your home, your air conditioning system uses a refrigerant. Here at Advantage Airtech, we wanted to let our customers know why this refrigerant is so important by explaining a little bit about how AC systems work.

Whenever you need any Scarborough, ON air conditioning services, just give us a call and one of our friendly technicians will be able to help.

How Air Conditioners Work

Have you ever used a can of compressed air to clean your computer? You probably noticed that as you released air, the outside of the canister got very cold. This is because the remaining gas inside the canister absorbs heat energy from the area around it in order to expand to fill the newly-emptied space.

Your air conditioning system operates in a similar manner. In the outside unit, there is a compressor that compresses the refrigerant and circulates it inside to the indoor unit which holds an evaporator coil. The refrigerant is released in the coils which causes them to get very cold. A fan pulls in warm air from your home and passes it over the coils. The heat from the air is absorbed by the refrigerant and circulated back outside where it is exhausted into the outdoor air.

Problem with Low Refrigerant

One of the most common air conditioning services we see here in Scarborough, Ontario is to refill air conditioning refrigerant. If there isn’t enough refrigerant in your system, it will cause big problems. You likely won’t get enough cooling in your home and your evaporator coils might freeze over as well.
