What to Do before Calling for Heating Repair

We cannot go without heat for long in our area, so we know that you cannot deal with a heating system breakdown for long. When your system breaks down completely, you want heat restored to your home quickly. Often, this means you have to wait for a technician to show up to your home. This is the ideal option when a component of your heater is broken, as a technician can fix such problems faster and with greater accuracy than the average home do-it-yourselfer. However, there are a few things you can check before making the call.

Is the thermostat working?

Alright, we know that this one sounds like a given. But sometimes, homeowners are so used to the heating system turning on automatically that they forget to check this. If you’ve recently had houseguests or if you have small children, there’s always a chance that someone could have changed up the settings, moved the switch over to cooling mode, or turned the system off altogether. You may even need new batteries for a wireless unit. For all other thermostat issues, professional heating repair is necessary.

Is there power to the unit?

Check to make sure there is not a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. This is important even for gas or oil heating systems (boilers and furnaces) which do rely on electricity to operate mechanical components. If there is no power to this area of your home, you may need to contact your electric company.

Is the gas working?

First things first. If you suspect a gas leak, it is vital that you leave the home immediately and call your utility company. If there are no signs of a gas leak (the smell of rotten eggs, for example, or a hissing sound), you may want to check the other gas appliances in the home or ask a neighbor if their gas appliances still work. If not, this is a job for the gas company. If you have a working thermostat, power to that area of the home, and a working gas supply, contact an HVAC professional for heating repair.
