What are Geothermal Systems?
Geothermal heating is so named because it is able to gather heat from the ground below and around your house and actually transfer it inside to keep you warm during the long winter months. What this actually means is that a geothermal system works much like a more traditional air source heat pump except that it gets its heat from the ground rather than the air.
This is done by circulating a fluid, usually a mixture of water and anti-freeze through a system of pipes installed in the ground below your house. This fluid is able to absorb heat from the ground and then return that heat to the compressor inside your house which then allows that heat to warm the air. Finally, the warmed air is circulated through the ducts of your home by an air handler or blower.
Once it has discharged the heat it was carrying, the fluid is then returned to the ground to pick up even more heat and start the process all over again. This is quite an effective way of heating your house in the winter, and what is even more remarkable is that a geothermal system can keep your house cool in the summer as well. To do this, the process is simply run in reverse, with heat being absorbed from your indoor air and then being transferred via the fluid to the ground below.
Benefits of a Geothermal System
Geothermal systems have several benefits over some other types of home heating and cooling systems. For instance, they are more efficient than air source heat pumps when the temperatures outside are lower because the ground is always warmer than the air. In fact, even if the ground around your house is frozen, a geothermal heat pump can extract heat because its pipes are generally installed at least three or four feet deep and well below the frost line.
While it is true that geothermal systems are a bit costly to install, they do not cost much to run once they are in place. You will certainly pay more to put in a geothermal system than you would a furnace or even an air source heat pump, but you will not have to pay the same monthly energy bills to keep it running. That being the case, geothermal home heating and cooling systems can actually save you quite a bit over time depending on the specifics of your circumstances.
