The ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes Program
Today’s most energy efficient homes not only save a tremendous amount of money each year, but reduce the overall impact of pollutants on the environment. Canada has long been supportive of HVAC upgrades that reduce the impact of the average home on the environment. To support that commitment, the popular ecoENERGY Retrofit Homes program was renewed until March 31, 2012 to benefit any homeowner who upgrades to the newest technology for their home’s heating and cooling systems.
How the ecoENERGY Grant Program Works
The ecoENERGY program is designed to provide money to homeowners in Canada to retrofit their homes with the newest heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment on the market. Furnaces with high AFUE ratings, new insulation, energy recovery ventilation, and high SEER/EER air conditioning qualify for the program, as they greatly reduce the cost of heating and cooling.
The grant provides up to $1840 for homeowners to upgrade their HVAC systems and a total of $5,000 for all energy efficiency upgrades to their home. The program has previously helped more than 500,000 Canadians upgrade their energy efficiency and save money on their bills.
Determining Your Grant Eligibility
Grant eligibility (and amount) is based on the type of system you plan on upgrading and the level of efficiency that system provides. For example, a gas furnace with an AFUE of 92 is eligible for a grant of up to $375. However, a gas furnace with an AFUE of 84 or higher with a brushless DC motor is eligible for as much as $790 in grant money. Natural Resources Canada has a complete grant chart available outlining the eligible amounts based on the upgrades you opt to have installed and whether it is your first or second upgrade. Visit the official government website to see the complete grant eligibility chart.
Choosing to Upgrade Your Home
While the grants provided by the ecoENERGY program will not cover the entire installation cost of a new system, they can severely defray the expense. Consider that you will also enjoy significantly lower energy bills month after month for years or even decades to come, and you’re not just getting a discount on installation – you’re getting a discount on your energy consumption.
If you’re tired of watching your gas and electric meters climb rapidly, look into the ecoENERGY Retrofit Homes Program and learn more about how you can get money to help with your next HVAC system upgrade.
