Most AC and furnace thermostats are built to last ten years or more, depending on the model, make and type of thermostat. Over time, your thermostat begins to age because of wear and tear, damage by severe heat, dust accumulation or even poor cooling system maintenance. You must replace a bad thermostat as soon as it begins to show signs of trouble, as ignoring a lousy thermostat can be catastrophic, especially in the cold months of winter or hot months of summer. If you are experiencing the following four problems, it is an indication that you need to replace your thermostat immediately.

Uneven temperatures

Experiencing cold and hot spots in your house is an indication of a malfunctioning thermostat. A bad thermostat will continually turn the HVAC system on and off at inconvenient times, causing poor distribution of temperatures, especially in the rooms farthest from the central unit, thus causing hot and cold spots.

An overheated room

When your thermostat is experiencing miscalibration, it can misread the temperatures in your home, causing the HVAC system to continue running to reach the desired temperature. This can make your home overheat and become uncomfortable. Therefore, if you notice the temperature in your home is different from the one indicated by the thermostat, it is an indication that it is faulty.

Failure to respond to changed settings

When you modify the temperature settings on your thermostat, it should respond almost immediately. You will most likely hear minor clicking sounds, and your HVAC system will start right away. If your HVAC system doesn’t turn on as soon as you make these adjustments, it’s likely broken and needs to be replaced.

Failure of the HVAC system to turn on and off

A faulty thermostat can make your HVAC unable to turn off. Additionally, it can make the system run non-stop. If you experience difficulty turning the HVAC system on, or if the system keeps running when in the “off” position, it is an indication that your thermostat is malfunctioning and needs repair.
